Fashion Magazine Covers Featuring Actors in Character

We're well used to seeing celebrities—particularly actors and actresses—looking glamorous and polished on the glossy covers of magazines each month. Prior to the 90s, fashion magazine covers were reserved mostly for the supermodel crowd (primarily, not exclusively), but somewhere along the way magazines began featuring movie stars as their cover stars in a bid to increase buzz and readership among the public.

Once in a while, however, an actor or actress appears not as his or herself, but instead as his or her film character on the cover of a magazine, making for a particularly meta-approach to film promotion as well as, oftentimes at least, a super fun fashion editorial.

The February 2016 cover of Vogue magazine, for instance, features none other than Ben Stiller as his dopey fashion model character Derek Zoolander, from the titular film sequel out on February 12. Also gracing the cover of Vogue, in 2006 actress Kirsten Dunst appeared as the French queen Marie Antoinette from Sophia Coppola's candy-coated period film from that year. Lensed by Annie Leibovitz, the opulent editorial has made for one of the fashion magazine's more iconic and collectible issues.

Other actors and actresses, and even some casts, have appeared as their film characters on magazine covers, including Emma Watson, Reese Witherspoon, and Anna Faris, who actually appeared on the cover of Playboy in 2008 as her ditzy The Girls Next Door-like character from The House Bunny. (Okay, so technically that one's not a fashion mag, but we'll still count it!)
