The 2014 BET Hip-Hop Awards aired tonight, Oct. 14, and while award nominees and winners were honored, the annual cyphers that traditionally air during the awards show were the reasons why hip-hop fans nationwide tuned in.

Cyphers are usually described as freestyle rap exchanges where a group of participants, sometimes standing in a circle, come up with their own rhymes to the same beat, trying to outwit the other person.

This year, BET announced a lineup of both rising and established artists, including Wiz Khalifa, Juicy J, Ty Dolla $ign, Tuki Carter, Berner, Chevy Woods, Remy Ma, Snow tha Product, Lil Mama, Dreezy, Papoose, David Banner, G-Eazy, Kevin Gates, Vic Mensa, Troy Ave, Logic, Treach, Genesis, Dee-1, Detroit Che, Loaded Lux, King Los, Corey Charron, DJ Scratch, T-Rex, Goodz, Rain 910, Conceited, Tsu Surf, Dillon Cooper, Two-9, Jarren Benton, Andy Mineo and Emilio Rojas.

Below are some of the highlights from the night's broadcast.
