At long last, Adam Levine and Ben Affleck have something in common: They're both now sporting enormous back tattoos from which they can never escape.

While Affleck chose to communicate his own risen-from-the-ashes story by inking a giant colorful phoenix across his back, Levine went a slightly more traditional route with his: A flying mermaid sits, perched atop some ocean waves, holding a skull in her lap.

The Maroon 5 singer debuted the massive tattoo on Instagram today (February 23), explaining it was a six-month work in progress and was completed by California-based artist Bryan Randolph, who works at Spider Murphy’s Tattoo.

“6 months in the making,” Levine wrote. “Thanks @bryanrandolph for absolutely blowing my mind with this one! Woooo hooooo!!!!”

Levine’s wife, Behati Prinsloo, also posted a photo of the tattoo to Instagram, noting that there’s “some serious art happening” on her husband’s back.

Fans have given their unprompted opinions on the tattoo via Instagram comments, and reviews are generally mixed. Saja33OmG expressed their condolences, writing, "that's awful...so sorry you're stuck with this," while torybright had more positive feelings, writing, "Wow....that is stunning @adamlevine !!! Gorgeous work!!!"

User @cycomimi offered a more diplomatic viewpoint, writing, “It’s not horrible. About like the face on my witch. Could be better. Honestly, it fits traditional americana style pinup tattooing. I’ve seen better but I’ve definitely seen worse."
