In an interview with Rolling Stonefor which the "Hello" singer appears as the November 19 cover feature, Adele says watching Amy Winehouse deteriorate is one reason you won't see her strolling down every red carpet, eating at the newest exclusive restaurant or ushering in the New Year somewhere in the Hollywood Hills.

"People think I hate being famous," she says. "And I don't. I'm really frightened of it. I think it's really toxic, and I think it's really easy to be dragged into it...Watching Amy deteriorate is one of the reasons I'm a bit frightened. We were all very entertained by her being a mess...That level of attention is really frightening, especially if you don't live around all that showbiz stuff."

And Adele, who admits celebrity is so unreal she often thinks she's being duped, hasn't yet ventured into the world of celebrity squads (her pre-19 friends are more than she needs, she says), but she's still intrigued by the idea of cultivating her own super-group.

"I wish my squad was all supermodels," she jokes. "We are, in our brains. I guess I have my own squad...But maybe Rihanna can be in my squad! That would be really cool. Oh, God. She's life itself, isn't she? I love her."

Another love? Cigarettes and alcohol, but after the birth of three-year-old son, Angelo, Adele's learned to ditch bad habits.

"I absolutely loved it, but it's not that f------ cool when I'm dying from a smoking-related illness and my kid is, like, devastated," she offers. "I used to be able to drink anyone under the table and still be able to put on an all-right show. But with kids, hangovers are torture. They just know. They pick up on it and just go for you."

Still, for all she's let go of upon entering motherhood, she's gained so much more, she insists.

"When I had him, it made everything all right, and I trusted everything because the world had given me this miracle, you know, so I became a bit of a hippie, an Earth mother." she adds. "I don't know if I would've come back had I not had my kid."

Angelo, we owe you everything.
