This year’s Afropunk Festival in Brooklyn featured plenty of heavy-hitter performers on stage, but was as much about the live music as the vibrant culture and atmosphere of acceptance.

On the first day, CeeLo Green belted out soulful tracks including his version of The Pussycat Dolls “Don’t Cha,” which he produced. He also performed notable tunes from his own catalog, including Gnarls Barkley’s “Crazy” and his anthetmic “F—k You.” On the same stage earlier in the day, the mesmerizing and hypnotic Laura Mvula performed a vibrant and uplifting set. And over on the Red Stage, Tyler the Creator got everyone bouncing with one of the best sets of the day.

Even though Ice Cube was the main act on the second day of the festival, Electric Lady Janelle Monae stole the show over on the Red Stage. In her signature black and white outfit, Ms. Monae rocked the house — and not only did she sound impeccable, but she danced and moved while smiling from ear to ear. Her fierceness was completely infectious, and she remains one of the most vivacious live acts to see today.

As if the music wasn’t enough, there were all sorts of artists and vendors — and delicious food, too. The most spectacular part of Afropunk Festival are the people: the fans that turn out year after year are some of the most creative, vibrant human beings…not to mention they dress to the nines. Check out our gallery above of some of the musicians that performed, and just as importantly, the people of Afropunk Festival.
