On the heels of Amanda Bynes' lawyer's statement clearing up rumors about the starlet's mental health, Bynes' mother Lynne is now speaking out about her daughter's condition, saying she has "no mental illness whatsoever" and that marijuana was the cause of her erratic behavior.

Bynes' mother, who was granted legal control over the troubled actress in August 2013, adds to the attorney's remarks that Bynes had not been diagnosed with schizophrenia -- in fact, she has never been diagnosed with any kind of mental illness at all.

"Amanda has no mental illness whatsoever. She has never been diagnosed as schizophrenic or bipolar," Lynne Bynes tells Us Weekly, via Amanda's lawyer Tamar Arminak. "She is very sorry for all the hurtful tweets, statements and actions that occurred while she was under the influence of marijuana."

Based on that statement, Bynes' mom seems to think that all of her daughter's behavior -- which included bizarre facial piercings, multiple DUIs and almost incoherent Twitter rants calling everyone from Barack Obama to Rihanna "ugly" -- stems from smoking weed. Is that possible?

Marijuana-induced psychosis is, in fact, a "thing," and based on one psychological study conducted in 2012, scientists have discovered that some may carry a gene that makes it more likely for them to develop psychosis.

“We found that cannabis users who carry a particular variant in the AKT1 gene had a twofold increased probability of a psychotic disorder and this increased up to sevenfold if they used cannabis daily,” Dr. Marta Di Forti explains (via PsychCentral). “Our findings help to explain why one cannabis user develops psychosis while his friends continue smoking without problems.”

The site also reports that during psychosis, "a person may experience personality changes and disordered thinking. Depending on its severity, this may include unusual or bizarre behavior, as well as having trouble with social interaction and problems with carrying out daily life activities."

Whether or not Amanda Bynes suffered from a mental illness or marijuana-induced psychosis, she seems to be doing well since being released from rehab in early December 2013. She has deleted all of her past offensive tweets and is currently studying fashion at FIDM in Orange County, California.
