'American Idol' contestant Scotty McCreery followed his personal choice of Montgomery Gentry's 'Gone' in the first round of the finals tonight with his own idol George Strait's selection of his hit 'Check Yes or No' in round two.

Dressed in a plaid shirt and jeans, and playing acoustic guitar, McCreery stood center stage as he delivered Straight's tune with his baritone twang. He was accompanied by an electric guitarist, a bassist, a fiddle player and a lap steel guitarist.

It was a safe performance by McCreery, but definitely one that should rally his fan base. He performed the song with a the confidence of an established country star, proving that his weeks of experience on 'Idol' have prepared him for the big stage.

McCreery had to wait until after Lauren Alaina performed to hear the judges' comments on the first two rounds. Randy Jackson gave the round one edge to McCreery, but said that Alaina won the second round. Jennifer Lopez agreed with Jackson's assessment. Steven Tyler quipped, "I have to give the first round and second round to Lauren, only because she's prettier."
