‘American Idol’ Recap: Top 3 Sing Their Hearts Out
On ‘American Idol’ tonight (May 8), the Top 3 — Kree Harrison, Candice Glover and Angie Miller — performed three songs each. The first group of songs was selected by Jimmy Iovine, the second round was chosen by the judges and the third was picked by ‘Idol’ producers.
The episode was chock full of heartfelt emotion, following the singers on a brief but poignant journey back to their respective hometowns before they returned to the stage to sing their hearts out. Randy Jackson called it “one of the best top threes we’ve ever had on ‘Idol.’”
Here’s PopCrush’s recap of the night’s performances:
ROUND ONE: JIMMY’S PICKS
Kree Harrison: Her first song of the night was Pink’s ‘Perfect,’ and the judges agreed that it wasn’t the best fit for her. However, Keith Urban saw past the unusual song choice and was sure to comment on her amazing vocals. “No matter what song you sing, you have such a strong, signature sound,” he said. Nicki Minaj called her voice “warm, sweet and pleasant to the ear” but suggested that she wear flats instead of heels next time to allow her to move around the stage more easily.
Candice Glover: She took on U2’s ‘One’ featuring Mary J. Blige and nailed it, despite never having heard the song until earlier this week. “That did not feel like ‘American Idol'; that felt like I was at your show,” said Minaj after her powerful and convincing performance. Jackson commented that “the emotion was so on point” that it compensated for any vocal mistakes she made along the way.
Angie Miller: Elton John’s ‘Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word’ presented Miller with the perfect opportunity to shine at her beloved piano — but surprisingly enough, she didn’t take it. The judges were disappointed but still praised her on a job well done. “I actually really liked it,” said Jackson. “This was one of the best performances I’ve seen you do,” agreed Mariah Carey.
ROUND TWO: JUDGES’ PICKS
Candice Glover: Her performance of Emeli Sande’s ‘Next to Me’ was packed with passion and emotion, touching judges and audience members alike. “You’ve come out swinging in this competition, and I’m just so proud of you,” said a teary-eyed Minaj.
Angie Miller: She rocked the ‘Idol’ stage with Pink’s ‘Try,’ proving that she can be 100% in her element even without her piano. “You’ve never looked this comfortable doing an uptempo song in your life,” gushed Minaj. “That song fit you like a glove. You sounded amazing on it,” said Jackson.
Kree Harrison: She tugged on our heartstrings with a soulful, haunting rendition of Rascal Flatts‘ ‘Here Comes Goodbye.’ “This was one of your best performances to date, because you felt every word,” said Minaj. “I’m so in awe of the purity of you when you sing,” Carey remarked.
ROUND THREE: ‘IDOL’ PRODUCTION PICKS
Angie Miller: Her version of yet another Emeli Sande song, ‘Maybe,’ impressed all four panelists. Jackson commented that Miller “became a complete performer” tonight, meaning that she took the judges’ advice to heart and showed a great deal of progress. “I think you did an amazing job with a song that’s not that easy for everybody to sing,” observed Carey. “Your growth has surpassed my expectations,” said Minaj.
Kree Harrison: Her rendition of the Band Perry’s ‘Better Dig Two’ paled in comparison to her earlier performance of the Rascal Flatts’ tune. “It just didn’t feel right for me,” said Urban. Minaj loved Harrison’s dimples but hated the song choice, saying that whoever picked it should be stoned. “It was too ordinary for you,” agreed Jackson. “Your voice is just too big for that kind of thing.”
Candice Glover: Her stunning delivery of ‘Somewhere’ received a standing ovation from the panel. “If you want to vote for Candice, dial the number on your screen. If you don’t want to vote for Candice, call your doctor because you probably don’t have a pulse,” joked Urban. “You’ve shown everybody you can sing any type of song, any day of the week,” exclaimed Carey.
Be sure to tune in tomorrow (May 9) for what’s bound to be an epic results show, and don’t forget to cast your vote for your favorite ‘Idol’ contestant!
