Amy Winehouse's death a little over a week ago feels a little more tragic in the wake of the news that the singer, 27, was secretly planning to adopt a daughter from St. Lucia, an island in the Caribbean.

According to the Daily Mirror, the child is named Dannika Augustine and she is 10-years-old.

Augustine told the paper, "Amy was already my mother." The two apparently met during the 'Rehab' signer's 2009 trip to the island. Augustine continued, "I would call her 'Mum.' And she would call me her daughter. She took care of me, and we had fun together. I loved her, and she loved me." Ouch.

It sounds like the two had already established a bond, even if other sources are shooting down this story as false. There is photographic evidence in the Mirror story of Winehouse and the little girl hugging and holding hands. It's enough to bring a tear to your eye for both of them in light of Winehouse's passing two Saturdays ago.

Winehouse was planning on adopting the girl and removing her from a life of poverty, something the girl's biological family supported, despite Winehouse's very public ordeal with drugs and alcohol. Winehouse planned to bring Dannika to London and raise her there.

The child's biological grandmother Marjorie Lambert also spoke to the paper, saying, "Amy loved Dannika with all her heart. I don't know why Amy took to Dannika above all the other children on the island, but from the moment they met, they were inseparable. They would spend all day playing, horse-riding and walking up and down the beach hand in hand."

The child's parents were also in favor of the adoption. "I thanked Amy for taking care of my daughter, and she said, 'Dannika is taking care of me. I couldn't live without her,'" father Vid Augustine reportedly said. "I knew [Winehouse] could give my daughter a wonderful life."

We guess we'll have to wait and see what Amy's father Mitch Winehouse, who has been quite visible and informative in the days since his daughter's passing. says about this matter and just how true it is.

UPDATE: An unnamed rep for Amy released a statement to TMZ saying, "It's not true. I think [Amy] might have met her in St. Lucia, but she was in no way about to adopt her."
