Beastie Boys, ‘Don’t Play No Game That I Can’t Win’ Feat. Santigold – Song Review
Beastie Boys are dropping the second single off of their 'Hot Sauce Committee Part Two' album, and this time around, the Brooklyn natives are bringing a bit of island flavor with the Santigold feature 'Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win.'
This track is a step away from the classic Beastie vibes the trio were giving off with their first single, 'Make Some Noise.' The dub-influenced, hip-hop beat (layering reggae sonics over hard-hitting drums) are paired with the smooth vocals from the Beastie Boys and Santigold -- making this track is a surefire summer jam.
The song kicks off with a horn section, bringing in some Latino flair before snare drums and Santigold's seamless, nasally voice bring it back to a Caribbean gangster style. "It's hot here gotta say it's so / I got you right where I want / Got an honest face so you turn your back / When in doubt run up your attack," Santigold sings in the intro.
Throughout the various rap verses delivered by Ad-Rock, Mike D, and MCA, the echo effect that has become a signature style for the trio is superimposed over the vocals, giving the song a looming, "don't mess with me" feel. Even though we would've hoped for some more bada-- Beastie lyrics -- this track tends to lean towards the more serious side, whereas personal preference draws us to their wackier verses -- the rhymes are still pretty solid.
Overall, 'Don't Play No Game That I Can't Win' is a groovable track that we're sure plenty of people will be bumping from their stereos as they cruise around town this summer.
