Looks like when you're a diva, a wheelchair is a viable accessory to your show, as opposed to a mobile assistance device. While we reported that Lady Gaga took the stage in Australia last week as her alter ego, the mermaid Yuyi, while in a wheelchair, it reminded us a similar stunt the late Kurt Cobain pulled in the early '90s. Turns out that Gaga was borrowing heavily from diva Bette Midler and her act.

Midler has been performing as a handi-capable mermaid since the '80s, so we'll assume that Gaga's paying tribute to the diva. After all, when addressing criticisms that 'Born This Way' was too similar to Madonna's 'Express Yourself' in an interview with the NME, Gaga said she writes pop music for the whole world to hear and that she's not trying to pull one over on anybody!

Midler, however, resorted to posting her "displeasure" at Gaga copying her act via Twitter, which is one of Gaga's most visible modes of communicating. On Friday, Midler tweeted "I'm not sure @ladygaga knows that I’ve performed my mermaid in a wheelchair for millions of people — and many of them are still alive…." She followed it with this post: "Dear @ladygaga if you think a mermaid in a wheelchair seems familiar-it's because it is!You can see it on youtube 24/7-with ME performing it."

By Saturday, Midler's irritation over the matter hadn't dissipated, as she posted: "Dear @ladygaga Ive been doing singing mermaid in a wheelchair since 1980-You can keep the meat dress and the firecracker tits - mermaid's mine." Can we just say we love that she starts out "Dear," like she is writing a letter! How cute; Midler is merging the past and the present in her Twitter etiquette.

Sunday found Midler a little more level-headed, offering an invite for a beverage at a grand celeb gala, writing, "let's drink this over at the Emmys in September. Fabulous mermaids can coexist!"

Gaga did not address the Divine Miss M's tweets, but she did tease us again about Yuyi and the upcoming video for the single yet to be named. Gaga wrote: "Next video in just days. So passionate about the concept. Can’t sleep. Visions of a surreal love. #YuyiIsReal. If you want her to be."

If one person thinks Yuyi is real, it's Midler!

While we're all about artists expressing themselves as they see fit, what's with the usage of wheelchairs?
