Bill Nye: The Science (And Pop Culture) Guy!

The actor and engineer has a brand new Netflix series in the works, according to The Hollywood ReporterAnd where The Science Guy focused almost exclusively on topics rooted in chemistry, astronomy or biology (themed episodes included digestion, static electricity and outer space) Bill Nye Saves the World will transcend lab work and also dive into politics, society and pop culture.

Set to premiere in Spring 2017, the series will explore a different topic and its implications on modern landscapes each episode and include a rotation of guests. Bill Nye is still very much the science guy, so expect lots of experiments, too.

"Since the start of the Science Guy show, I’ve been on a mission to change the world by getting people everywhere excited about the fundamental ideas in science,” Nye,whose extremely popular Bill Nye the Science Guy aired 100 episodes on PBS between 1993 and 1998, told THR. “Today, I’m excited to be working with Netflix on a new show, where we’ll discuss the complex scientific issues facing us today, with episodes on vaccinations, genetically modified foods and climate change. With the right science and good writing, we’ll do our best to enlighten and entertain our audience. And, perhaps we’ll change the world a little.”

Netflix and Bunim/Murray Productions will produce the series, comedian Mike Drucker of The Tonight Show and Saturday Night Live will serve as head writer and Phil Plait will act as head science writer.

Bill Nye Saves the World is Netflix's second original talk show — the first, Chelsea Handler's Chelsea, premiered in May. And there's more Bill to come, too: The Bill Nye Film, Kickstarter's most supported documentary ever, is set for a 2017 release date. The project has been endorsed by Nye and will explore his life and work.
