46-year-old Rudy Parris always had a burning desire to pursue a career in music – but he put his dreams on hold in order to be a family man. Now, more than twenty years later, he has received his moment to shine via his blind audition on ‘The Voice,’ where he put a country spin on the Police classic, ‘Every Breath You Take.’

Blake Shelton and Cee Lo Green hit their buzzers as Parris carried the well-known tune in a way that was both fresh and familiar. But his singing wasn’t the only thing that the judges noticed. In fact, “I want your hair!” were the first words that left Cee Lo’s mouth. With a head of long, dark hair, Parris certainly looked more like a member of Kiss than a country singer – but Shelton was more than willing to see past that.

“You damn sure don’t look country at all, but country is still in there, man. I don’t know what you’re gonna do about that other than pick me for your coach,” he said. Shelton’s reasoning must have hit home, because it wasn’t long after that Parris said, “Cee Lo, you’re awesome … But because my roots are so deep in country music, I think I’m gonna go with Blake Shelton.” He was the final addition to Team Blake.

Even greater than Parris’ passion for music is his desire to look after his family – particularly his daughter. In order to make sure that his little girl was taken care of, he stayed home with her and played local gigs instead of touring the world when he was younger. Now that she’s all grown up with a child of her own, he finally has the freedom to go after what he’s wanted for so long.

“I put my dreams of hold and I took care of my daughter. I really feel like this is my good thing coming back to me,” Parris said.
