Congrats to Bon Iver! The Eau Claire, Wis. native took home the Best New Artist trophy at the 2012 Grammys. While the man behind the moniker, Justin Vernon, expressed some discomfort at receiving the award, he also recognized that it's a huge honor. Vernon thanked his fellow nominees, as well as "all the other artists" who've never been nominated before and never will be. Uh, we're sure they appreciate your gratitude, Justin!

Bon Iver's nomination sparked some debate when it was first announced. The band formed in 2007 and received critical acclaim for its debut album in 2008, so the group's eligibility for a Best New Artist Grammy in 2012 seemed unlikely. Nicki Minaj faced similar questions, as she's been dropping mixtapes since 2007.

However, the Grammys have a very broad definition of “new artist.” Individuals or groups can be considered for Best New Artist if they have three or fewer albums under their belt and if they release “the first recording which establishes the public identity of that artist” during the eligibility period.

Bon Iver also nabbed the Best Alternative Album for 'Bon Iver.'

Facing some fierce competition and technicalities, Bon Iver may have recognized his luck in his win. "Thanks to all the voters," he smirked. "Sweet hookup!"
