"Here's a song I wrote for myself" was how veteran songwriter Bonnie McKee prefaced her lively performance of 'American Girl.'

It's a new single that she chose to keep while she launches her career as a pop singer, as opposed to giving it to Katy Perry or Kesha, two divas for whom she has penned tracks.

The perky, peppy singer performed the track at the KIIS 102.7 FM studio, wearing short shorts, a varsity-like jacket and playing her keyboard.

Girl's got spunk! No wonder she wants to branch out and make a go of it herself, as opposed to being the songwriter-behind-the-scenes. She's certainly not a belter, but she has vivacity and energy and that's all a pop-star-in-training needs.
