The remaining members of Fifth Harmony made it very clear last night (December 19) amid Camila Cabello’s sudden departure that they intend to press on as a foursome. But what’s in the cards for Cabello, and does she have a shot at real solo stardom?

Camila’s independent ambitions became clear as soon as a 2015 collaboration with Shawn Mendes. “I Know What You Did Last Summer,” which the duo first announced in November 2015, came coupled with Cabello’s barefaced thrill to be off on her own.

She tried to do some damage control in a corresponding issue with Seventeen (“It’s been very difficult to watch people criticize me and my intentions. It’s been sh–ty. They turned me [doing the song] into a conspiracy theory,” she wrote), but no amount of backpedaling could stop what seemed like the inevitable.

Increasing evidence that Cabello was seeking a solo career came in October, when a second collaboration — this one with Machine Gun Kelly — dropped. “Bad Things,” a slow-moving track with hip-hop flair, immediately caught on with fans, and eventually earned Cabello and MGK the distinction of PopCrush fans’ favorite pop collaboration of 2016.

And in the event musical pursuits didn’t spell out Cabello’s solo ambitions clearly, she’s also alluded to her hopes for a standalone career in various interviews. During a September 2015 chat with Latinashe noted keeping Fifth Harmony together sometimes seemed like a Herculean task.

“We’d be lying if we all said this is a picture-perfect thing, like we all completely agreed on the album track list and what the sound and the music video treatment would be like, which usually happens in bands who grew up together…but for manufactured bands, it’s harder,” she said.

So, Cabello’s current collection of solo work considered, do you think she’s got what it takes to be a big star on her own? Take our poll and expand on your choice in the comments.
