David Leathers Jr., Shannon Magrane + Jessica Phillips Hit All the Right Notes on Round 1 of ‘American Idol’
“I have ties that are older than you are.” These are the words Steven Tyler used to describe David Leathers, Jr. The 17-year-old from Fayetteville, N.C. showed off his vocal chops as he performed Celine Dion‘s ‘Because You Loved Me,’ in Hollywood. This kid hit his notes like a real man! Just remember, age ain’t nothing but a number, especially when it comes to Little David Leathers, cause his voice is grown up!
Steven Tyler had some rather, uh, awkward terms to describe the next young contestant, Shannon Magrane of Tampa, Fla. during her original audition in Savannah, Ga. We believe he desccribed her as “hot, humid and happening,”…to her father. Uncomfortable comments aside, Magrane did a wonderful job singing ‘Fallin” by Alicia Keys. Certainly a no brainer as to why she advanced.
Last in the group was Jessica Phillips, a girl from Brooklyn, N.Y., whose past has been no cakewalk. Her long-term boyfriend Angelo suffered a serious stroke and she is now his caretaker. Putting her struggles behind her, Phillips performed ‘All The Man That I Need,’ by Whitney Houston and showed the audience why she was there. While her voice is next to perfect, we would love to hear her tackle a song outside of her soul and R&B box.
Three more hugely talented people moving onto the next round. Bring it, Hollywood!
