Demi Lovato Slays With An Emotionally Rousing Cover Of Aretha Franklin’s ‘Ain’t No Way’
From Disney pop-rocker to dance-pop diva to classic soul sister, Demi Lovato—and that big ol' voice of hers—never ceases to amaze us.
The "Confident" crooner performed at the Time Warner Cable VMA Concert last night at the Avalon in Los Angeles. Amid a 45-minute set packed with 11 songs, including hits like "Really Don't Care," "Neon Lights," and her 2015 summer smash "Cool For The Summer," Demi surprised concertgoers with a powerful, emotionally rousing cover of gospel queen Aretha Franklin's 1968 Lady Soul b-side track, "Ain't No Way."
The cover, which you can watch in the video above, proves that Demi's voice is just gorgeously suited to the classic soul sound, the jazzy, stripped down live rendition showcasing the depth of her smokey vocals and the heights and complex notes her voice can reach. (And to be honest, her stunning diva-esque belting here reminds us of another modern soul singer with a big, iconic voice: Adele.)
Of course, long-time Demi Lovato fans will recognize the deeper meaning and poignancy behind the singer's cover selection. The artist actually chose to perform "Ain't No Way" during her Camp Rock audition many moons ago for the Disney Channel, way back in 2008. And as you can hear in the clip below, she nailed it then—just like she did last night.
Demi's forthcoming fifth studio album, Confident, is due out in October, and the track-listing and official cover art were recently revealed on social media. Here's looking forward to more big vocals, emotional lyrics, and surprising moments ahead—which are sure to be abundant, knowing Demi.
