On Saturday, Demi Lovato performed her first concert in nearly a year and surprised her fans with a cover of Lil Wayne's sensitive ballad 'How to Love.'

Lovato's performance had dozens of fans at New York City's Hammerstein Ballroom breaking out their cameras to record the unexpected cover. She adjusted the lyrics to sing in the first person, so that she is the girl who's unable to give herself credit and figure out how to love a man.

"When I was just a young'un, my looks were so precious," she sang. "But now I'm grown up, so fly it's a blessing / But now I can't have a man look at me for five seconds / Without me feeling insecure."

The lyrics seemed to hit home for Lovato, who struggled with her self-image and cut short her tour last fall to seek treatment for an eating disorder. She let loose as the cover continued, earning cheers as she belted out the lines about the crooks trying to steal her heart.

Lovato's album 'Unbroken' comes out tomorrow, Sept. 20. Check out more pics from Lovato's Hammerstein Ballroom concert.
