UPDATE: Production on Maze Runner: The Death Cure is still halted following Dylan O'Brien's accident on set, and now Fox has announced that the film's release will officially be pushed back nearly a year, from February 17, 2017 to January 12, 2018.

O'Brien continues to recover from injuries sustained while filming back in March. There is currently no official date announced for when production will begin again.

ORIGINAL POST (MAY 2): Fans of the Maze Runner movies will have to be (very) patient as they wait for the third installment: Production has shut down indefinitely due to the injuries Dylan O'Brien sustained on set.

As we reported back in March, the Teen Wolf actor was rushed to the hospital after getting hurt while filming Maze Runner: The Death Cure in Vancouver, Canada. Initial reports had him falling off the back of a train structure where he was then struck by another vehicle, and a WorkSafe BC report obtained by the Hollywood Reporter list "concussion, facial fracture and lacerations" among his injuries. Originally slated to pick production back up in May, there is now no set return date for cast and crew.

James Dashner, author of the Maze Runner YA book series on which the films are based, tweeted an update the day after O'Brien's accident. Like initial statements from Fox, it seemed to suggest his injuries were less grave than first reports presented them.

"I just want to let everyone know that yes, Dylan was hurt, but that he’s going to be okay. Not life threatening in any way," Dashner wrote on March 18.

On April 30 the author provided an update, effectively confirming production was at a standstill and would be for the foreseeable future. "Some think the word 'indefinitely' means 'permanently,'" he tweeted. "It does not, and not everything is a conspiracy. Dylan just needs a little more time."

A "little more time" may be a relative and optimistic term, but we certainly hope O'Brien is, in fact, being given a respite from Fox to properly heal from his wounds. The actor hasn't posted any tweets or Instagram updates since his scary-sounding accident.

"His injuries are very serious, and he needs more time to recover," O’Brien’s publicist, Jennifer Allen, said in a statement.

The Death Cure was originally slated for a Feb. 17, 2017 release. We wish Dylan a speedy and full recovery.
