Very sad news to report: Edward Herrmann, of the immensely popular show ‘Gilmore Girls,’ passed away this morning (Dec. 31) in a New York City hospital at the age of 71.

TMZ is reporting that Herrmann was apparently suffering from brain cancer and had spent the past three and a half weeks in the hospital's ICU. Sadly, his condition failed to improve and his family made the difficult decision to take him off life support.

Herrmann is most well-known for his role as the Gilmore patriarch, Richard Gilmore, appearing in every season of the beloved show 'Gilmore Girls.' He also appeared on ‘The Good Wife’ and ‘Grey’s Anatomy,’ just to name a few. He recently had a role in 'The Wolf of Wall Street' alongside Leonardo DiCaprio.

Herrmann is survived by his second wife, Star, and his three children. Our thoughts go out to Herrmann’s family during what we can only imagine is an incredibly difficult time.
