Ed Sheeran never officially confirmed that his song "Don't" was about Ellie Goulding ditching him for Niall Horan, but it's kind of one of those unspoken truths of the entertainment industry -- sort of how Taylor Swift's "Style" is maybe-possibly-definitely about Harry Styles. We'll never really know for sure, but it is. Ellie, however, is over all the rumors and sets the record straight in the upcoming issue of Elle U.K. Well, sort of.

Speaking about the whole Ed-slash-Niall fiasco, Ellie said (quotes via E! News), "I did go on a few dates with Niall but I was never in a relationship with Ed. I have absolutely no idea where that came from and why it was turned into such a big thing."

She went on to talk about how unfair society and the media are when it comes to female musicians and the intense focus on their relationships, rather than their music. Ellie said, "I find it so frustrating that female musicians are constantly defined by the men they have or haven't dated. It's something I've talked about with [Taylor Swift] a lot. She definitely feels that. She gets bothered by it. It's like, you can be a great artist, you can write great songs, but the thing that everyone is going to talk about is some relationship they think you have had or not had. It's definitely something we both think happens to female artists over male artists."

Speaking of Taylor, Ellie posted a photo to Instagram earlier today showing her and Lorde in the same vicinity as noted Swift nemesis, Katy Perry. Ellie promptly deleted the photo, though no one's entirely sure as to whether it has anything to do with a fear of incurring Taylor's all-powerful wrath or not.

Maybe she's right about the media caring a little too much about these relationships.
