Frank Ocean Opens Up About Coming Out Letter + Records ‘Django Unchained’ Track

Frank Ocean certainly had an eventful 2012. Just before he released his critically-acclaimed album 'channel ORANGE,' he outed himself in an open letter about loving another man. In GQ's Men of the Year issue he talks candidly about revealing his bisexuality to the world.

"The night I posted it, I cried like a f---ing baby," he tells the magazine, adding that it was tears of joys he was feeling that night. "It was like all the frequency just clicked to a change in my head. All the receptors were now receiving a different signal, and I was happy. I hadn't been happy in so long. There's just some magic in truth and honesty and openness."

However, he wouldn't confirm to the magazine if he considers himself bisexual. "People should pay attention to that in the letter: I didn't need to label it for it to have impact," he said.

There are some people who believe that Ocean's "coming out" letter was a crafty promotional move for his new album, but Ocean says that's absurd. “Some people said, ‘He’s saying he fell in love with a guy for hype.’ As if that’s the best hype you can get in hip-hop or black music. So I knew that if I was going to say what I said, it had to be in concert with one of the most brilliant pieces of art that has come out in my generation."

Hidden in the GQ article is news that Ocean has a recorded a song for the Quentin Tarantino-directed western/slavery flick 'Django Unchained,' which stars Jamie Foxx and Kerry Washington. If that's the case, it would put him in the running for an Academy Award for Best Song. How awesome would it be to see the 'Swim Good' crooner walk across the stage to accept his Oscar? Pretty awesome, in our book.

In the meantime, Ocean is working on a myriad of projects including songs for Beyonce's next album, tunes for his own third album and a European tour, which he wants to pattern off of Pink Floyd's 'The Wall' tour.

In the end, Ocean is making music fearlessly and is not worried about being put into any kind of particularly box. "As a writer, as a creator, I'm giving you my experiences," he says. "I'm giving you what I feel like you can feel. The other s---, you can't feel. You can't feel a box. You can't feel a label. Don't get caught up in that s---. It's nothing. Vanish the fear."
