The ‘Friends’ Cast, Minus One, Honors TV Director James Burrows

The cast of Friends (minus one) joined cast members from other beloved shows, including Taxi, Frasier, Will & Grace and The Big Bang Theory, for a tribute to one of TV’s most prolific directors on Sunday night (February 21). Must See TV: An All-Star Tribute to James Burrows was hosted by Bravo’s Andy Cohen, and featured chats with some of Burrows’ famous colleagues, who looked back at their days on set and shared what it was like to work with him.

“We would do anything for Jim Burrows because he really gave us the opportunity of a lifetime, and probably the best 10 year of our acting careers,” Friends star Jennifer Aniston told Cohen. “We experienced friendship, family, heartbreak, babies, everything, together. And we also had a wonderful experience with the world loving us as well.”

Matt LeBlanc said Burrows encouraged the cast to “get to know one another, and be kind to one another,” saying he’d gather them around a piano. Aniston’s nostalgia, however, doesn’t quite match up: “We had a piano?”

Lisa Kudrow and Aniston cited another effective bonding tactic of Burrows: Poker. “He gave us his [dressing] room,” Kudrow told Cohen, so that they could play cards and “connect.”

“We instinctively felt like, ‘we need to be friends,'” Kudrow said. The five also made sure to say hi to Matthew Perry — or “Matty,” as they apparently call him — who couldn’t make the taping because of a play he was debuting in London. Perry did appear in a video at the top of their reunion segment, to introduce “my actual friends, who happen to be the cast of Friends.”

You can watch the special in its entirety above. See clips from the Friends reunion — in which David Schwimmer says what he learned as a director from Burrows, and Aniston describes how she was originally called to audition for the role of Monica, and vice versa — below.
