‘Glee’ Recap: Will and Emma, Will They Say ‘I Do’ or I Don’t?

Glee - I Do - Darren Criss Chris Colpher
FOX

On this very special Valentine’s Day episode of ‘Glee‘, Will Schuester (Matthew Morrison) and Emma Pillsbury (Jayma Mays) finally tie the knot. Or do they? Regardless of how their second marriages begin or never begin, the New Directions will help their teachers get through their romantic-comedy tinged wedding. Through song.

Finn (Cory Monteith) admits to Rachel (Lea Michele) that he kissed Mrs. Pillsbury. Finn thinks he should admit everything to Will, but Rachel suggests he keep it to himself. When Rachel tries to intimate that he only kissed Emma because her relationship with Brody (Dean Geyer) set him off, Finn tells her not everything is about Rachel Berry. Before she leaves, she tells him to act the part of the supportive best man for everyone’s sake.

Emma, meanwhile, is equally stressed with wedding planning, which doesn’t get any better when Finn visits her to talk about how he doesn’t think he can lie to his friend and her future husband. She angrily tells him to get over it when Will surprises everyone by showing up and being completely oblivious.

At practice, Will thanks a sheepish Finn for all his help and assigns the club the task with entertaining at his wedding reception. In lieu of a best man speech, Will asks Finn to sing a song.

While Emma cleans Artie’s (Kevin McHale) locker, she tells him about her niece, Betty (Ali Stroker), who will be sitting with him at the wedding.

In the hallways, Marley (Melissa Benoist) gives Jake (Jacob Artist) an early Valentine’s Day present: cufflinks to wear at the wedding. Jake says he can’t wait to give her his present. Marley leaves and Ryder (Blake Jenner) enters. Jake admits he didn’t get Marley anything, and Ryder suggests he do something romantic, like make Valentine’s Day into Valentine’s Week.

Rachel agrees to help Finn with his wedding song by performing a duet with him. Finn jokingly asks her if she’ll be able to handle their duet chemistry and there is so much sexual tension you could cut it with a knife.

Jake interrupts Marley’s history class so they can sing Marvin Gaye’s ‘You’re All I Need to Get By’ with some assistance from Ryder, who is still obviously pining for Marley.

Then it’s time for the wedding, with former characters Santana (Naya Rivera) and Quinn (Diana Agron) making appearances for the big event. Artie meets Emma’s rude niece who says not only does she not date people in wheelchairs, but she also doesn’t date nerds because she’s a blonde, popular cheerleader.

Jake gives Marley some flowers (all her favorites) chosen and picked out by Ryder, which she loves.

Kurt (Chris Colfer) and Blaine (Darren Criss) are heavily reconnecting outside the church in a car when they’re interrupted by Mercedes (Amber Riley) who says the wedding is about to start.

Emma’s nerves become worse when Sue (Jane Lynch) comes to see her in the same exact wedding dress, which she donned to punish Will for hiring Finn as his replacement. Emma, Will and the assembled church-goers, minus Sue, sing the song ‘(Not) Getting Married Today’ from the play Company while Emma jumps in a taxi and takes off. It is left up to Sue to tell Will the bad news.

Will blames himself for Emma’s disappearance, saying he didn’t understand her stress while Finn struggles to comfort him. Enter Santana to pass along the message that Emma’s parents are more than willing to go ahead with the reception since everything is paid for anyway. Will tells everyone to have a good time and leaves to find his runaway bride.

During the wedding, Quinn and Santana continue to bond over their singledom.

Jake thanks Ryder for all his help so far and asks for one more Valentine’s Week idea. Ryder suggests it would mean more if the gift came from him, but he still hands him a necklace to give Marley. Jake thanks him again and yells out, “I am so getting laid tonight,” before admitting that he got a room for the night just in case. Even though Ryder tells Jake that Marley isn’t ready, Jake assures his friend he won’t hurt her and goes to give his girlfriend a necklace that someone else bought her.

Kurt and Blaine perform ‘Just Can’t Get Enough’ by Depeche Mode while Tina (Jenna Ushkowitz) glares daggers at them.

Rachel and Finn dance together after she cheers him up, saying there were probably plenty of other reasons Emma bolted. Artie finally gets Betty to dance with him. Insert dance montage here.

Tina attacks Kurt after he reminds Blaine that they’re still not back together, yelling that she doesn’t like how he’s treating Blaine. Kurt tells her to stop fighting for what she can never have and she accidentally admits to “vapo-raping” him in the last episode, ‘Diva‘. Their words, not ours.

Sue goes onstage to tell the true, bloody story of Valentine’s Day before throwing the bouquet in Emma’s place. Rachel catches it while a smiling Finn looks on.

Later on, a drunken Finn talks nonsensical platitudes to Rachel about bouquets and flowers, tries to psychoanalyze her relationship with Brody and admits he knows that no matter what, she and him will be “endgame.” Rachel reminds Finn they have to sing their duet ‘We’ve Got Tonite’ by Bob Seger.

During their song, Quinn and Santana slow dance and the couples move off to their hotel rooms while singing the Seger song. Finn and Rachel, Blaine and Kurt, Marley and Jake, Quinn and Santana, and Artie and Betty go to their respective rooms to get it on.

Later, after all the deeds have been done, we learn Kurt still doesn’t consider he and Blaine together, Quinn says her experimentation was only a one time thing, Jake did not take Marley’s virginity, and Rachel sneaks out on Finn without saying a real goodbye.

Back in New York, Rachel finds her apartment decorated by Brody. Since they have a “modern” relationship, he asks her if she was with anyone in Ohio because she’s kissing him differently. She admits she saw Finn, but that’s all she says. When Rachel asks him what he did while she was gone, there’s a flashback to Brody leaving a fancy hotel room with a wad of money in his hand but no other explanation.

In school, Tina apologizes to Kurt and Blaine. They accept her feelings of unrequited love and invite her out with them. Meanwhile, Marley thanks Ryder for all the sweet Valentine’s Day presents, admitting she knew it was him all along. He kisses her, but immediately apologizes and leaves.

Finn promises Will they’re going to win Nationals, will find Emma and make things right. Together.

Enter Betty, who apologizes to Artie for being rude to him, saying she’s mean as a defense mechanism when she’s nervous. They exchange numbers and he invites her out on a date.

To celebrate the best wedding that never happened, the New Directions perform Ellie Goulding‘s ‘Anything Could Happen,’ while in New York, a distraught Rachel is awaiting the results of a pregnancy test.
