Green Day Release Anti-Donald Trump Lyric Video for ‘Troubled Times’
Green Day have never shied away from disclosing their political beliefs, and their latest lyric video for current Revolution Radio single "Troubled Times" takes a shot at Donald Trump -- just in case their performance at the 2016 American Music Awards failed to make their stance on the president-elect's win clear.
The video features footage of an animated Trump figure (complete with a "Make America Great Again" hat perched atop his head), as well as imagery from several famous protests for equality and justice -- including the 1963 March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom -- directly interspersed with disturbing visuals from KKK protests.
The clip -- which was released yesterday (January 16), on Martin Luther King Jr. Day and was directed by Manu Viqueira and David Rodriguez Simón -- ends just as many people fear the world may, too -- in total disaster.
"Today we celebrate love and compassion more than ever," said Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong in a statement to Rolling Stone.
The band were among the few artists to protest the president-elect during the 2016 American Music Awards, taking the opportunity to chant, “No Trump, no KKK, no fascist USA” during their performance of the track “Bang Bang.”
"We didn't rehearse it," Armstrong said, after the awards show. “We’re just as much in shock as everybody else is [about Trump’s election]. But I think with the AMAs, for us, it was a good start to challenge him on all of his ignorant policies and racism.”
