Green Day are back in the studio working on their next record, and they're excited about the new music, according to frontman Billie Joe Armstrong.

Yesterday, the singer tweeted: "Ok here's the scoop. GD has been jamming new songs everyday. There's a ton of new songs. The direction is fresh and hi energy. Feels great."

Armstrong added, "I don't want to give away too much but just know that me, Mike, Tre and Jason are collaborating and having the best time playing music."

Perhaps the biggest challenge facing Green Day is figuring out where to go next. After the success of opuses 'American Idiot' and '21st Century Breakdown,' and Armstrong's detour onto Broadway, do they come back with something even bigger? Or simplify things and record a batch of three-minute punk songs?

We'll have to wait to find out, but the group's enthusiasm is a good sign. '21st Century Breakdown' topped the album chart and won a Grammy for Best Rock Album.

Green Day hit No. 14 in April with the live CD/DVD 'Live as F---,' and there's talk of 'American Idiot' going to the big screen.
