Michael Bay has been churning out Transformers movies for over a decade, and though the franchise may seem a little overdone now that five films exist, its first spinoff is going to be special.

On Tuesday (June 5), Paramount Pictures shared the first trailer for Bumblebee—the origin story of the fan favorite transformer of the same name. The movie is set in the 1980s and stars actress/singer Hailee Steinfeld. The clip begins with Steinfeld stumbling upon a yellow Volkswagen Beetle at a junkyard. She's seemingly drawn to the raggedy car and takes it home. When it begins to act funny, she slides under the car to investigate. That's when Bumblebee's eyes light up.

The rest of the trailer is snapshots of the adventures and turmoil that ensue after the transformer reveals his identity to Steinfeld, including a snippet of John Cena looking very serious in a military getup. Watch the trailer below.

Though the franchise's first handful of films were directed by Bay, Kubo and the Two Strings director and ParaNorman producer/animator Travis Knight took the reins for Bumblebee.

"When I was a kid, I spent hours playing with Transformers toys and making up stories about these amazing characters, so it's been an incredible adventure to come to set every day to tell the story of who Bumblebee is and why we love him," Knight said in an IG video.

Bumblebee is set to hit theaters this Christmas.
