With extreme wealth often comes a disconnect from reality, which is probably the only way anyone could -- genuinely, without a hint of embarrassment -- ask Sir Ian McKellen to officiate a wedding while dressed as his Lord of the Rings character, Gandalf.

The actor -- who became a celebrant to officiate the union of Patrick Stewart and Sunny Ozell -- turned down a hefty $1.5 million to marry Napster founder Sean Parker and his now-wife Alexandra Lenas back in 2013. The couple had a Lord of the Rings-themed wedding and requested McKellen officiate, in character.

While McKellen says he may have considered it, the caveat of appearing in Gandalf garb turned him off to the idea entirely.

“I was offered one-and-a-half million dollars to marry a very famous couple in California, which I would perhaps have considered doing, but I had to go dressed as Gandalf,” he told The Daily Mail. “So I said, ‘I am sorry, Gandalf doesn’t do weddings.’”

McKellen claims the request was made through a mutual friend, and the couple's identity was never revealed to him.

“He was a very rich man, that’s all I know,” the Hobbit actor said, before adding, “I don’t go dressing up — except in plays and things at places like this.”

Parker’s wedding, meanwhile, proved to be a gross display of wealth -- guests were individually outfitted by Lord of the Rings costume designer Ngila Dickson -- with a fair amount of controversy baked in for good measure. The ceremony took place in California’s Big Sur, near an area with a notoriously sensitive ecosystem.

Parker, who was portrayed by a sleazy Justin Timberlake in The Social Network, reportedly spent around $10 million on the wedding -- not accounting for the $2.5 million he paid conservation programs following a settlement with the California Coastal Commission for building along the fragile land without a permit.
