Jennifer Lopez Gets Her Old Hollywood Glam on With W Cover, Reveals She Was Once Homeless
Jennifer Lopez shows a very different side of her glam self on the August 2013 cover of W.
She also shared the fact that she was once homeless, which means she probably had a small, crappy apartment in a bad section of town while trying to get famous, and that she has mad Bronx pride.
First, about her look. She abandoned her signature bronzed skin, nude lip and overarching ultra sexy image in favor of a classic, Old Hollywood glam vibe, complete with big, dark waves and reddish pink lips. She kept the sexy part intact and subtle with a see-through mesh and peacock dress.
The interview took place near the singer/actress/designer/diva’s childhood home in the Bronx, which made her nervous. Not because Jenny From the Block is ashamed of where she is from. In fact, she’s quite the opposite, revealing her former love-hate relationship with L.A. and how it reminds her of her love for the home city, saying, “Now I love Los Angeles, but it doesn’t give me strength the way the Bronx did. All the strength that I needed for life, I got from that neighborhood.”
The reason it was tough to “go home” was because of her most recent memory affiliated with the borough. “The last time I was in there was when my mom and dad called us home to tell us they were separating after 33 years of marriage,” she confessed. “I think that’s why I was nervous about coming here today. It’s like seeing someone from the past—you’re afraid to run into them because you never know if it’s going to be ‘wow’ or very difficult. This is a combination of both.”
She also spoke of her relationship with her mother, a former Tupperware lady and school employee, saying, “My mom and I butted heads. I didn’t want to go to college — I wanted to try dance full-time. I was homeless. But I told her ‘This is what I have to do.'” From homeless to one of the world’s biggest divas! While it’s doubtful J. Lo slept on streets and had a cup in hand, she likely did struggle mightily when she was scratching and clawing her way to the top of the celebrity food chain.
As for her own children, twins Max and Emme, La Lopez wants to lead by example. “I think a lot about teaching my kids to work hard,” she said. “I’ve learned something about kids — they don’t do what you say; they do what you do. I watched my parents.”
J to the Lo also shared how being the second of three children shaped her. “I’m the middle sister. All three of us girls shared a room. I was into sports and dancing. I ran track. I have a lot of stamina. I was built for the long run,” she said.
The long run indeed.
