Kanye West Called ‘Pioneer of This Queer S–‘ by Rapper Lord Jamar for Wearing a Skirt
It’s only Tuesday, but we’re calling it now: This week’s Chris Culliver Award for the most thoughtless homophobic comments goes to Lord Jamar, the Brand Nubian emcee who’s making it his one-man mission to stamp out dudes wearing skirts in hip-hop.
The main object of Jamar’s ire is Kanye West, who showed up wearing a skirt to the 12-12-12 benefit show — and who’s now getting namechecked in Jamar’s new track ‘Lift Up Your Skirt,’ which consists largely of a lot of sputtering anti-gay rage that we aren’t going to bother reprinting here.
As Gawker notes, this isn’t the first time Jamar has been associated with homophobic sentiment. Brand Nubian’s 1993 track ‘Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down’ contained a particularly inflammatory line — one that Jamar didn’t rap, mind you, but one echoed by his own recent comments.
“First of all, it’s not just jabs at Kanye West. It’s anybody promoting the feminization — of the black man in hip-hop culture,” Jamar explained during a January interview with SOHH.com. “Anybody that I see out there, rocking dresses and all of that type of s—, I might shoot a jab at. But Kanye is one of the ones right now that’s representing that movement. He’s one of the first ones that you see in a skirt.”
Adding a dash of ethnocentrism to his homophobia, Jamar continued, “Now you got other people following suit and rocking full-out dresses or they’re trying to rock kilts. We’re not Irish. We’re not Europeans. Rocking kilts and all that is just another excuse to introduce that skirt style. You understand what I’m saying? And I’m not with it.”
Concluding with one last mad flourish of tortured logic, Jamar insisted that for him, it isn’t even a gay issue. “This has nothing to do with sexuality, who they choose to be with and all that, I’m not even talking about that. I’m talking specifically about, what is hip-hop? And that’s not hip-hop. Rocking dresses with mean faces, that’s not hip-hop.”
Come to think of it, ‘Rocking Dresses With Mean Faces’ might be a pretty great name for a song. Your move, Mr. West.
