If you want proof of the pliability of pop music, then you need to take a listen to this brilliant mashup of Katy Perry's 'Hummingbird Heartbeat' with Whitney Houston's '80s anthem 'I Wanna Dance With Somebody (Who Loves Me,)' among many others. It's called 'Young Hearts Wanna Beat on Their Own.'

Perry and Houston's songs are the main jams that are effectively smashed together in this sweet and seamless sonic stew. Robyn, Kesha, will.i.am, and the Naked and Famous tunes are also thrown in for good measure, but it's Perry who is the owner of the hook and Whit who stands out, since the '80s were her era. She was the diva of the day and her voice is so bold and bright.

The mashup opens with the Naked and Famous' indie pop confection 'Young Blood,' with the lyrics "We're all young and naive still / We require certain skill." Swedish pop pixie Robyn drops a few "Ohs" and Kesha asserts her dirty self deeper into the song, while will is rapping! There's so much going on and it'll take you one or two or five listens to truly process the whole thing and to catch all the nuances and layers.

The mashup is this generation's mixtape and this particular mashup, designed by The Jane Doze, sounds like it was recorded and cut in a studio by each individual artist. It's almost flawless, and there's no disconnect between each song. It could become a hit onto its own. The whole is greater than the sum of its parts here!
