Even though he wasn't in attendance, Kendrick Lamar took home two Grammy Awards last night (Feb. 8) for Best Rap Song and Best Rap Performance for 'i.' While his presence at the awards show was sorely missed, fans were in for a treat today (Feb. 9) when his dynamic new single, 'The Blacker The Berry,' was released.

While 'i' was Kendrick's self-love anthem of the ages, 'The Blacker The Berry' goes on to explore that theme in a completely different way -- it's much darker, more gritty. The booming bass line and intensity of his lyrics hits you immediately, as he tackles the topics of racism and being black in America, rapping, "You hate me don't you? / You hate my people, your plan is to terminate my culture."

The racially charged lyrics go on, "I'm the biggest hypocrite of 2015 / Once I finish this, witnesses will convey just what I mean / I mean it's evident that I'm irrelevant to society / That's what you're telling me, penitentiary would only hire me."

The new single also seems to pay homage to Tupac's massive hit 'Keep Ya Head Up,' with the repetition of the phrase, "The blacker the berry / The sweeter the juice," toward the beginning of the track.
