Lady Gaga might be the new Freddie Mercury! Say what?

Queen guitarist Brian May has already partnered with the Mother Monster for her new single 'You & I,' injecting the song with an electric guitar punch and even performed the tune with her at the 2011 VMAs. Now, the guitarist is saying that the band is in negotiations to have Gaga front a new version of the band. Gaga? Singing 'Bohemian Rhapsody' and 'We Are the Champions?' Seriously? That would be completely and totally amazing on all fronts, wouldn't it?

May said that the band needs to fix its "singer problem," an issue which stems back to Mercury's death in 1991. Speaking at the BMI awards, where he received an Icon award on behalf of the band, May told The Express that "We talk about going out on the road all the time, but there’s a bit of a singer problem to put it mildly."

While he admitted the band is not short on offers from singers looking to step into Mercury's boots, May is keen on Gaga. "I worked with Lady Gaga and she’s very creative and is someone we’ve talked about singing, fronting the band with. She’s not just a singer, she writes her own material," he said.

He also said that Gaga is into the idea, as well, admitting, "Lady Gaga has said she would like to do something with us."

Much like Mercury was, Gaga is larger than life, has a powerful voice and is incredibly flamboyant with her look. We don't think he'd roll over in his grave if Gaga stepped into his role as the vocalist and front person of Queen. She'd do right by him and his legacy!

We doubt Gaga would abandon her solo career to take a position in the band full-time, but we bet she'd be up for doing a tour, a record, and working with the band on some level!
