Leonardo DiCaprio Says He Has Never Done Drugs

Hollywood is full of temptation — something that has, sadly, become all too obvious in the wake of Philip Seymour Hoffman’s death and Justin Bieber‘s recent antics and DUI arrest. Yet somehow, certain celebrities are able to resist the illegal highs and pitfalls that stardom has to offer — and Leonardo DiCaprio is one of them.

In an in-depth interview with the Los Angeles Times, the ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ star admits that he has never done drugs, explaining that his drug-free attitude is due to growing up in a poor neighborhood where drug use was prevalent.

“Never done it,” DiCaprio told the newspaper, referring to drugs. “That’s because I saw this stuff literally every day when I was 3 or 4 years old. So Hollywood was a walk in the park for me… I’d go to parties and it was there and, yeah, there’s that temptation.”

But DiCaprio, who has been acting since he was a young teen, managed to resist. Though he partied when he was younger (and was apparently smoking an electronic cigarette during the interview), DiCaprio maintains that he stayed away from drugs.

Until he was 9 years old, the actor grew up in an poor, run-down neighborhood near L.A., where he recalled that there “used to be a major prostitution ring on my street corner, crime and violence everywhere” — a difficult image to see as a child, but something that ultimately prepared him as an actor, particularly for his role as Jordan Belfort in ‘Wolf of Wall Street.’

“Hollywood is a very volatile place where artists come in and they essentially say they want to belong. It’s incredibly vulnerable to be an actor and also get criticism at a young age when you’re formulating who you are,” DiCaprio continued. “We’ve seen a lot of people fall victim to that, and it’s very unfortunate.”

Unfortunate, indeed. But in a world where way too many celebrity deaths have been caused by drugs and other temptations of fame and fortune, it is refreshing to hear that a successful, A-list star has been able to live a drug-free existence.
