Lupe Fiasco, ‘Bad B—-‘ – Song Review

The issue of misogyny in rap has always been a thorny subject when it comes to the music. Female rappers like Nicki Minaj have openly embraced the word "b----," while male rappers use it to describe women.

Rapper Lupe Fiasco addresses the issue of the B-word on his new single, 'Bad B----,' which is from his upcoming LP 'Food & Liquor: The Great American Rap Album.'

The socially-conscious track features Fiasco talking about how impressionable young kids could misinterpret the word 'b----' as a term of endearment or scorn. In one story line, a young toddler hears his mother reciting a female rapper's song in which she calls herself a "bad b----."

He raps: "Couple of things are happenin' here / First he's relatin' the word 'b----' with his mama - comma / And because she's relatin' to herself, his most important source of help / And mental health, he may skew respect for dishonor."

Fiasco drives home the point on the repetitive chorus which goes, "B---- bad, woman good / Lady better, they misunderstood (I'm killin' these b----es)."

The only caveat about this song is Fiasco's monotone flow, which could possibly bore the listener. And the haunting production is not that particularly exciting, as well.

Nevertheless, it's very noble of Lupe Fiasco to use his voice to address a social issue, in the same regard as male rappers who are often criticized for using the N-word. The message is noteworthy and appreciated.

This is hip-hop on a higher level.
