From the "Backhanded Compliment" Department: Madonna has finally commented on the title track from Lady Gaga's 'Born This Way.' When the song dropped about a year ago, it was instantly met with accusations that Gaga had blatantly and directly ripped off and copied Madge's 1989 hit, 'Express Yourself.' It was not lost on Madonna herself, who only recently referred to the song as a 'redo.'

While Gaga even addressed those criticisms, pointing out that she releases pop music on a mass scale and isn't trying to pull the wool over anyone's eyes, Madonna spoke to Newsweek's Jacob Bernstein, according to this Tumblr, and directly address the similarities.

"I thought, this is a wonderful way to redo my song," Madonna said about 'Born This Way' and 'Express Yourself.' She continued, "I mean, I recognized the chord changes. I thought it was…interesting."

Breaking down Madge's short but not-exactly-sweet assessment: She calls it wonderful, but then calls it a redo, so that's sorta backhanded. Her second statement, that it's "interesting," feels like it has a little bite to it. Madge isn't being catty and taking a swipe at Gaga, but she is asserting her dominance in a subtle way, which we're not used to, since she is overt.

Oh ladies, just get it over with. Exchange texts, blow air kisses and get in the studio for the duet of all time!

The piece will run in the Jan. 30 issue of the magazine.
