Did Madonna Lie About Building 10 Schools in Malawi?
There's no question Madonna does what she can to help the African country of Malawi. She has been working to improve the area's education problems since 2006. She adopted two children -- David and Mercy -- from the country. But her claim that her Raising Malawi charity erected 10 schools in the country has been disputed by Malawi's education minister, who claims the schools were already in existence and Madge's organization did not construct them.
Eunice Kazembe has questioned Madge's claims, saying, "The schools Raising Malawi claims to have constructed were already in existence. Raising Malawi only built 10 classroom blocks and not schools. People should know the difference between the two."
Is this a matter of semantics?
In Raising Malawi's mind, yes.
Officials at the organization told The Huffington Post that they were shocked by Kazembe's unmerited statements.
However, it is suggested that Kazembe has a bit of an axe to grind with Madonna due to political affiliations. The Reader's Digest-ible version? Anjimile Oponyo, the sister of Malawi's president, previously worked with Madonna on a girl's school that fell through due to Oponyo's weak management skills so she was fired. That affiliation may have sparked Kazembe to make negative comments, according to a source.
Whatever the case, Madge is doing her part to help. No good deed goes unpunished, it seems.
