Madonna closed out the 2016 Billboard Music Awards with a special tribute to late legend Prince.

The tone was appropriately somber, as the venue was draped in purple -- Prince's signature color. The intro for "Let's Go Crazy" blared out from the stage, as Madonna (clad in a lilac suit with ruffled sleeves and sat atop a purple velvet throne) swiveled around to the crowd. She performed a dutiful rendition of "Nothing Compares 2 U" as images of the late icon appeared behind her.

Madonna then welcomed Stevie Wonder to the stage, where he joined her in an emotional performance of "Purple Rain." It was a fitting way to honor Prince's legacy -- an understated, respectful ode to an artist that defied categorization and genre, and impacted music in such an enormous way.
