Mara Wilson Has No Plans to Star in ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ Sequel

NBC Newswire

With the announcement that a ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ sequel is in the works — reportedly with Robin Williams set to reprise his role as everyone’s favorite nanny — fans have immediately descended on Twitter to ask Mara Wilson (who played Natalie, the youngest member of the Hillard family) if she will sign on for the sequel. And in a series of tweets, she candidly explained her answer.

The former child actress, who also starred as the titular character in ‘Matilda,’ has retired from acting professionally (in a post she explains on her blog here) and is now a writer and works for a non-profit organization. She’s crazy active on Twitter to begin with, but since the announcement of ‘Mrs. Doubtfire 2,’ her mentions have blown up. And she has responded honestly:

While some of the tweets may seem harsh, she’s kind of right. While the original film is a fan favorite, is a sequel really necessary? ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ ended so perfectly — with Williams bringing the character to comfort many on TV but never getting back with Sally Field’s character — what could they possibly do in a sequel?

The Lisa she refers to in her second-to-last tweet, is, of course, Lisa Jakub, who starred as her older sister Lydia in the film. For her part, Jakub had no idea about a ‘Doubtfire 2,’ tweeting:

We have to agree with Wilson on this one: a ‘Mrs. Doubtfire 2′ just seems like a stretch.

PopCrushers, what do you think of a ‘Mrs. Doubtfire’ sequel? Would you see it?
