Maroon 5, ‘Daylight’ – Song Review

Maroon 5 are slowing things down on ‘Daylight,’ the third single from their ‘Overexposed’ album and the one singer Adam Levine calls his favorite on the entire record.

Viewers of ‘The Voice‘ are already familiar with the new song, since the band debuted it live this week on the show. A pulsing intro featuring a lone electric guitar builds up to big choruses and a stadium-sized climax.

Lyrically, it’s a simple song, with Levine singing that since his relationship is about to end, he wants to savor the last night with his special someone. “And when the daylight comes I’ll have to go / But tonight I’m gonna hold you so close / Cause in the daylight, we’ll be on our own / But tonight I need to hold you so close.

Levine never explains exactly why he has to leave, but we can infer that trouble has been brewing for some time, based on the confused tone when he asks, “We knew this day would come / We knew it all along / How did it come so fast?

‘Daylight’ doesn’t blow us away immediately, but its endearingly bittersweet lyrics and catchy “whoa-oh” chants make this a song that will probably get better with each repeated listen.

Even though slower songs aren’t faring particularly well at radio right now, this one might be strong enough to break through, especially since Maroon 5′s popularity is at an all-time high with the success of recent singles ‘Payphone’ and ‘One More Night.’
