Poet laureate Maya Angelou has passed away at the age of 86, CNN reports. She died in her home, although her cause of death has not yet been released.

Angelou, a renowned poet, was also a novelist and actress. According to CNN, she spoke at least six languages and worked as a news reporter overseas. She is most well-recognized for her autobiography, 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings.'

Over her lifetime, Angelou counted many notable icons among her friends, including Oprah Winfrey and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Even the writer's last tweet conveyed her powerful, eloquent voice.

As the sad news of her death spread, many celebrities took to Twitter to express their condolences for her death and to celebrate the accomplishments of her life. While journalist Soledad O'Brien recounted her first interview with the literary figure, other celebs, like model Gigi Hadid, simply quoted the writer.
