The news of the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting affected people nationwide, including singer-songwriter Mike Posner, who has written and dedicated a new song for the families of the tragedy.

Entitled 'Heaven,' Posner takes a simple, acoustic approach to the short-and-sweet pop tune, which was born out of his own inability to process the events of Dec. 14. The 24-year-old sings, "Maybe this will make sense in heaven 'cause right now it don't make sense at all."

He explained his inspiration for the song via Twitter. "I wanted to do SOMETHING for the victims' families and I didn't really know what else to do," Posner wrote. "Writing songs is pretty much the only thing I'm good at so I hope you'll share this as you see fit ... Today makes no sense ... God has blessed me with this gift and it felt wrong not to share it. I hope this song finds its way to proper ears."

The Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Conn. claimed the lives of 20 children and 6 adults. The country has been in mourning since Friday, and as President Obama, the father of two girls, said during his tearful press conference last week, "Our hearts are broken today."
