Though the signs of Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth walking down the aisle aren't too bright, the duo apparently are attempting to make it work. New reports say that though Hemsworth went Down Under to take a break from his fiancee, the pair are still speaking.

"Miley and Liam are talking," a source told Us Weekly, "But he needed a beat."

The pair have been on the rocks since late last month, when Hemsworth was spotted out and about with actress January Jones. Since then, Cyrus has been seen without her engagement ring, a move the starlet is said to have made to spite Hemsworth. (That doesn't bode well for a mature, lasting relationship, does it?)

E! News reports that Hemsworth, who recently purchased a bachelor pad in Australia, doesn't seem to be in a particularly good nor bad mood. "He doesn't seem especially sad [or] happy," a source said. "He seems to be enjoying seeing his family as far as we can tell."

Still, it may not be looking too promising: a source told PEOPLE Cyrus seems “exhausted” and that the couple have “split for now.” “She has no plans to see Liam but seems to be clinging to hope that they will get back together,” the source admitted. “Miley hasn’t canceled the wedding.”

Still, there's hope! "Miley and Liam] have been a bit rocky, but are not giving up," another source revealed. "They both want it to work."
