Here’s How Miley Cyrus’ Comeback Song, ‘Malibu,’ Sounds so Far

We’re just one day away from the release of Miley Cyrus“gimmick-free” comeback track “Malibu,” due out on May 11 — the Emancipation of Destiny Hope Cyrus, if you will.

And now, we’ve got a taste of what the “Wrecking Ball” singer-songwriter is serving up on this go-around, thanks to a preview she just posted on Twitter.

Ditching the in-your-face, tongue-wagging twerk-a-thon styling of songs like Mike Will Made It collabo “23” or “We Can’t Stop” on Bangerz (a visual and sonic switch-up which is already earning her plenty of criticism), “Malibu” falls more in line with the tenderness of “Adore You,” or the more introspective stuff on her 2015 experimental mixtape Miley Cyrus & Her Dead Petz; her voice gliding across a warm, summery pop-rock guitar strum.

Next to you,” she gently sings. “In Malibu…

Something about the subtlety of this preview alone suggests she won’t be riding in on a giant hot dog this time around. (Well, never say never.)

“My record is political, but the sound bite doesn’t stop there. Because you can write something beautiful and you know E! News will ruin our lives and say, ‘This is a political record.’ Because then I’m the Dixie Chicks and I’m getting my album smashed in the streets, and that’s not what I want. I want to talk to people in a compassionate, understanding way — which people aren’t doing,” she explained to Billboard of her upcoming LP.

Miley will be making her debut performance of “Malibu” at the Billboard Music Awards on Sunday, May 21.
