Miley Cyrus Brings Up A Point About Double Standards In New Interview With ‘Marie Claire,’ Says Taylor Swift’s ‘Bad Blood’ Not A Good Example

Wild child Miley Cyrus covers the September issue of Marie Claire magazine, and inside the cover story, Cyrus reveals that she isn’t a big fan of Taylor Swift’s “Bad Blood” video. But we’re not all that surprised—after all, she’s just being Miley!

Referring to Swift’s Vevo record-breaking video, Cyrus reveals during the interview, “I don’t get the violence revenge thing. That’s supposed to be a good example? And I’m a bad role model because I’m running around with my ti—es out? I’m not sure how ti—es are worse than guns.”

While many are now whispering about the potential bad blood brewing between Miley and Taylor, the “We Can’t Stop” singer does make a good point about double standards in our entertainment culture, pointing out that while violence of varying degrees is totally acceptable, women’s ownership of their own bodies and displays of female sexual empowerment are, well, not so much.

Miley has, of course, become a somewhat controversial figure in the pop culture canon since shedding her Hannah Montana wigs and cowgirl boots of yesteryear, her post-Bangerz sexually liberated, drug referencing, pasties-wearing persona not exactly jiving with the parents whose kids watched her grow up on the Disney Channel. But this is exactly the point—while Miley’s image and antics may have become a bit more wild than many are willing to accept, her mission statement as an artist has only become more noble in many ways.

For instance, the singer is an avid feminist and adamant supporter of women’s rights and equality, fighting relentlessly against the double standards in our society. She explains to Marie Claire, “There is so much sexism, ageism, you name it. Kendrick Lamar sings about LSD and he’s cool. I do it and I’m a druggie whore.” Another point well made, Miley.

In addition, Cyrus is a fervent philanthropist, LGBT activist, and supporter of countless charities, particularly ones focusing marginalized people, such the homeless and LGBT youth who are at the center of Cyrus’ own Happy Hippie Foundation. Recently, the pop star was honored for all the work she’s done at the 2015 AmfAR Gala, receiving the organization’s Inspiration Award and giving a very inspirational, eloquent, emotional speech during her acceptance.

Despite all of this good work, though, there are some who are still unwilling to consider Cyrus a good role model simply due to her physical appearance and rowdy mannerisms—like the Parents Television Council, who have lashed out against the star’s upcoming gig as the host of the 2015 MTV Video Music Awards on August 30. But no matter what your opinion of Miley Cyrus is, one thing is not up for debate—the artist works hard to defend the things she believes in, and we think that’s commendable.
