The next iteration of Power Rangers heroes will essentially grow protective suits out of their skin, Entertainment Weekly reported today (May 5).

The forthcoming Rangers film, which is based on the 1993 kids' action TV series, debuted its new collection of armor in the story's featured image. The costume-updates are a far cry from the spandex ensembles trusted by the characters' forefathers: Pink, Red, Black, Yellow and Blue each look ready for a track and field semifinal event somewhere around Orion's belt.

"Ours is an alien costume that grows on them, that’s not man-made. You can’t win everyone over, but we are trying to appeal to a more mature audience and gain new fans," production designer Andrew Menzies told EW.

Director Dean Israelite added that the garb was inspired by the story of the Rangers, themselves.

"These suits needed to feel like they were catalyzed by these kids and their energy, their spirit," he said.

The shift isn't a huge surprise, considering the recent unveiling of Elizabeth Banks' Rita Repulsa costume. While the villain wore a billowy rust-red gown and sported a headpiece accented with dueling spikes in the early '90s, Banks' costume has evolved into a sexified Poison Ivy.
