The city of Oakland, Calif., has a rich and diverse music history. During the 1960s, the city developed the funk music scene, which sprouted influential bands like Sly & the Family Stone and Graham Central Station.

But it's also home to soul and hip-hop music, as well. Legendary hip-hoppers Too Short and Digital Underground brought the P-Funk to rap with their unique artistry. The Pointer Sisters gave soul music some pop and MC Hammer brought excitement and entertainment to hip-hop.

Oakland is still a vibrant musical city. Soulful artists like Keyshia Cole, Goapele and Raphael Saadiq are bringing attention to their hometown in Northern California. These and other artists make their city very proud.

In honor of the Bay Area, PopCrush presents 10 R&B and Hip-Hop artists from Oakland. Celebrate the city's rich musical history with us.
