The Pointer Sisters were a hugely successful R&B group during the '70s and '80s. The trio consists of sisters June, Ruth and Anita Pointer. Growing up in West Oakland, they were reared to sing gospel music by their church-going parents, Reverend Elton Pointer and Sarah Pointer.

As adults, the sisters pursued a singing career, first as background singers for rock artists like Boz Scaggs, Grace Slick and Elvin Bishop. Through trial and error, they garnered minor success in the '70s with several albums, including 'That's a Plenty' and 'Steppin,' which included the hit single, 'How Long (Betcha Got a Chick on the Side).'

It wasn't until the '80s that the girls achieved their biggest commercial success. Songs like 'He's So Shy' and 'Slow Hand' catapulted them to the top of the charts. In 1983 the Pointer Sisters released 'Break Out,' which boasts four chart-topping singles -- 'Automatic,' 'Jump (For My Love),' 'Neutron Dance,' and perhaps their most well-known track, 'I'm So Excited.'
