Ricky Martin and Carlos Gonzales Abella, his partner of several years, have split.

A rep for the 'Livin' La Vida Loca' singer, who is the father of twin sons, confirmed that the pair parted ways.

"Ricky and Carlos have mutually agreed to end their relationship but continue to be united by friendship and their shared experiences," read the statement, provided to PEOPLE.

So, based on that statement, it sounds like the former couple remains on good terms and looks back fondly at the time together. However, an insider revealed that things began going south earlier this fall and that distance may have been the reason that the twosome eventually split.

"They've spent very little time together and have grown apart," a source said. "They've been on the outs for a while now."

What a bum out! They seemed like such a supportive couple, and Martin -- who just turned 42 on Christmas Eve -- previously gushed about Gonzales and his acceptance of Martin being a father in a Vanity Fair cover spread.

Martin's sons, Matteo and Valentino, are 5 and were born via a surrogate.
